No Motto $20 Saint-Gaudens are one of the most notorious gold coins in the pre 1933 era. These infamous gold coins are nicknamed No Motto because they lack famous motto: "In God We Trust". These beautiful gold coins were created by famous sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens after president Teddy Roosevelt asked him to come up with some new fresh design.
According to some stories president Roosevelt wanted to remove this famous motto as to him it was blasphemy to use the Lord’s name on coins that were so often used to buy "worldly" goods and services. However this wasn't warmly accepted among public, both Christians and Jews, and not soon after in 1908 Congress passed a law that made obligatory for all US coins to bear "In God We Trust" motto.
And in the middle of 1908 United States Mint halted mintage of No Motto $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coins whic makes this year very special one since both Motto and No Motto Saint Gaudens were minted in one year.
No Motto $20 Saint-Gaudens are among scarcest pre 1933 gold coins (more than six times scarcer than the ones with Motto), have high demand and are therefore very expensive gold coins.
These beautiful gold coins have diameter of 34 mm, their weight is 33,436 grams, and they were minted in Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco.
