Type III gold dollar were made much longer than other two types, from 1856 to 1889. Gold dollar type III design is much similar to gold dollar type II and the main difference is the head, which is much larger at type 3 design. Inscription United States of America is also closer to the border encircling the head. Twice in this 33-year old period mintage exceeded a million pieces per one year in 1856 and in 1862. Main mint was in Philadelphia.
Type II gold dollars are the most common of all three types and is therefore really not surprise that they are used in jewelry, such as bracelets and earrings. The average type III gold dollar coin worth about $100. This type was more successful than previous two types in achieving the required durability.
